报告摘要:Lithium-ion batteries have revolutionized portable electronics but requires a substantial increase in energy density and reduction in cost to meet the pressing demand from large-scale applications such as electric vehicle and grid-level energy storage. In this presentation, I will first discuss the promise and challenge of conversion cathode materials that boast high energy-density through multiple Li-ion storage. Specifically, I will discuss the chemical syntheses, structural and electrochemical characterizations, and in situ mechanistic studies of nanostructured iron fluorides (FeF2 and FeF3) through X-ray spectroscopic imaging and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). Second, I will discuss recent research into electrode architecture design and assembly that not only enables high energy-density storage but also significantly reduces cost by minimizing the amount of inactive materials (separator, current collectors, and packaging) in the battery. Specifically, I will show novel magnetic-alignment processing methods that yield low-tortuosity electrodes with several times the thickness and areal capacity of conventional electrodes, yet has transport kinetics rapid enough for most power applications..
